I am reading “The Next Christians” by Gabe Lyons. The author has made an in-depth study of looking historically at the attitude behind “Christians.” I asked a lot of questions on my last blog. As I continue reading, I was surprised how categorically Lyons placed Christians. He has three groups.
#1 Separatist
#2 Cultural
#3 Restorers
It is the third group, The Restorers, that involves “The Next Christians.” I am going to quote, in part, his definition of the next christians: “they exhibit the mind-set, humility, and commitment to rejuvenate the faith; they have a peculiar way of thinking, being, and doing that is radically different from previous generations. Telling others about Jesus is important, but conversion isn’t their only motive. Their mission is to infuse the world with beauty, grace, justice, and love.”
He further describes the ‘next christians’ recognize that the world will not be completely healed until Christ’s return, but that process must begin as we partner with God. They do not separate themselves from the world or blend in. They thoughtfully engage and realize the need to restore; to allow God to do something in their life time.
What I have read is that they do not restrict their activities to “Religion” but their faith ’carries over into every day of the week and each aspect of their careers, relationships, and social lives.”
This is a must read book. If you enter into the reading of it with a ‘set’ mind you will not glean from it the message of “Relearning Restoration” – “Provoked, Not Offended” or the chapter “Creators, Not Critics” etc.
I will be blogging more about “The Next Christians” and hope you will come back and be a part of this blog.
“I received this book for free from WaterBrook Multnomah Publishing Group for this review.”
Very interesting. I personally don’t really get caught up in the titles of Christians as much as what and who they are! We are supposed to live the Christ-filled life. Are our lives showing that? It doesn’t matter if you call yourself a separatist, fundamentalist, or reformer in my mind. How do you act? Are you Christlike in your thoughts and behavior? Then others will know you “by your fruits”. We get so caught up in the outside appearance of people….even though God himself made it clear that He sees the heart. But our heart will be seen in our actions eventually. it really isn’t what we put on our bodies, or where we live, or even how much money we make and “give” to the poor…..1 Corinthians sums it up well….do we love others? That is the Christian!
btw, thanks for loving like a Christian!
I never thought about ‘titles’ either. However, what I have read so far this author, along with his research team are finding out the answer to the decline and the negative response toward the most amazing thing in the world. I’m keeping an open mind. What I am reading and the comparison the author makes with the scripture and the religion in Jesus’ day – I really believe that “Restoration” is needed. Keep posted as I blog this book.
