Who ever told you that most are below national standards is wrong. Sorry I am not trying to argue with you or anything. It just gets old to hear the same arguments. Not saying it can’t happen just not as often as some people like to believe. And in some cases (not all of course) the children that get put back in school are the ones that didn’t do well with homeschooling so that isn’t a fair assessment.
Ok sorry from rambling on with that. on to the rest of your questions
. I have known some children who went back to the public schools for one reason or another and did really well and some even were ahead. I also have heard of children being behind too.
How do I feel I am doing with homeschooling my children? I think things are going great. My oldest catches on things really quickly and ready to move one. While my youngest takes a little time for him to learn a new concept because he is very much a hands on learner. Once he learns it though he is ready to move on! Each child is different so I have to adjust to their learning styles. Can be challenging but well worth it
.
Challenges? I guess that would be teaching each child to their own learning styles. My oldest son is a visual and audio learner while my youngest son is hands on and visual. So learning to adjust for each child and finding ways for them to learn the way they do best!
What would I do differently? I guess that would be not to be so uptight like I was in our first year of homeschooling. If I knew now what I did then I wouldn’t have had to worry myself so much.
Do I put my children’s education first? I guess that would depend. I put my children’s lives first and that goes a long with their education. So I guess you could say yes
.
Sometimes my older son helps his younger brother but that’s more on his lead not my direction. We do lot of work together. I just make it a little different for each so they can do it at their ability whatever that might be. (Mine are 21 months apart in age)
How do I keep from getting sidetrack? I guess I really don’t understand that question. There are times we might stop one lesson and finding something really interesting to learn and do that and maybe come back to the previous lesson later or on a later date. Is that what you mean?
Do we have a school room? No, we do it where ever we feel like it. Sometimes that’s at the Kitchen table, some times it’s on the couch or on the floor or even my desk. It all depends on what we feel like that day or what we are doing.
Field Trips. Oh yeah we go on a lot of different field trips! Just today as a matter of fact. We went to a Veterinary Clinic and they got to go on a tour on how they take care of animals and even participate in some things
. We have also went to the Zoo, Museums, Art Museums, Dairy Farms (and too many to list).
Am I a part of a homeschool group? Yes, but I also joined a MOMS Club near us and they also do a lot with kids getting together and doing field trips too! So the boy’s have both homeschooled and public/private schooled friends.
I hope that helps in some way
When I wondered if you got side tracked, I meant is it difficult not to get involved with running errands, phone calls, cleaning, doing laundry etc. I really loved reading your response, I find if so interesting to hear about home schooling. I don’t have school age children, but I believe if the situation had presented itself and I did not have to go to work, I would have tried it. We send our children to a Christian school. Thanks so much for your response.
Oh ok I see
. My boy’s are now 8 and 6. My eight year old does a lot of independent work (he just turned 8 in March) and my six year old just finished Kindergarten and he also does some independent work though not as much as his older brother of course. So I can do a lot of errends when they are doing their independent work. We have to go to the Laundromat to do laundry (no hook-ups where we rent lol) so I take them with me and they do their work there. I don’t get a lot of phone calls during the morning hours and when I do the boy’s do well on their own for a bit while I talk. I am glad you liked my response. Sorry it got really long LOL.
Just so you know I am not against public/private schools at all
homeschooling right now works for us. Who knows what we will do in the future
.
[...] Once a Wounded Lily, Now a Desert Rose has a number of questions regarding homeschooling. In fact, most of her entry is a list of questions for homeschoolers. Before I get to that, however, I wanted to share what initially attracted me to her blog: I love the Lord with all my heart and since I am suffering from a form of dementia, I find blogging challenging… [...]
Well, my answers became too long for a single comment box. So I put them all on my blog: Concerning homeschooling
We have been homeschooling four years and I have four children, ages 9, 5, 3 and one.
Well, my girls are back in school or are going to be at the beginning of next school year with the exception of Mikayla. She will be kept home. But, while they were home, we were organized, then unorganized until we found our groove. We did school everywhere and any where because everything is a learning experience. We the younger two where put back into school because of me having JT and having to be at the hospital all of the time, the teachers were all impressed with their level of learning. And their manners. Couldn’t believe how polite and friendly they were.
I have no idea how I kept from being sidetracked because I am not sure that I did. I know that I did take phone calls if I knew it was necessary but, other than that, we weren’t really rigid around here. My Dh did all the errands so, I really didn’t need to worry about that and if I had to do something we would all pile in the car and go.
We did lots of field trips. We loved to find all the free stuff around our community to go to. And the performing arts center had lots of plays that we were able to see. We really enjoyed that.
I never belonged to a homeschool group. There really weren’t any close by that impressed me.
That is all I can think of at the moment this is getting really long. lol.
I sure enjoyed hearing about homeschooling. Isn’t it awesome that everyone does it a little different but their kids excell when compared to public education. Thanks for sharing.
