Christmas Devotion

When my husband’s family gets together, he always does a Christmas devotion. In our younger years we would bring puppets or do a skit. This year we have a small bag full of candy and a candy cane. We are using an old dollar bill, a crisp one dollar bill, a silver dollar and the new gold dollar.
We read the Christmas story and then have an object lesson:
Ask the children how much this bill is (hold up the old dollar bill). The reply is a $1.00
Show them the crisp dollar bill. Again they say $1.00
So the only difference is one is newer than the other, but they are still $1
Show them the silver dollar. If the kids don’t recognize it, open it to the adults. Response is $1
Then show them the new gold dollar. Ask if they know what this is. Again the response is $1
Christmas is like the money we just looked at. All four are worth one dollar. They all look different, but they are worth the same thing.
The same is true for the Christmas Story. We can have many different manager scenes, but they all mean the same thing. Some might show some animals, shepherds and wise men, you might even see a camel and a cow, you might even see a star. But you always see the most important three.
(We will be taking a three piece nativity scene to show). Pointing to Joseph, we ask ‘Who is this?’ Looking for Joseph as the response. Pointing next to Mary we ask, Who is she? Response of course would be Mary. Then we point and ask who the baby is in the manger. They of course will identify baby Jesus or Jesus.
Just as we have a new gold dollar coin, it is shiny and new, so should each Christmas be to us. Christmas is a wonderful time of the year to celebrate Jesus’ Birthday. We as Christians celebrate Jesus as King of Kings and Lord of Lords. He is our friend and our Savior.
We are going to give each of you a new dollar so you can remember every day of the year is wonderful because Jesus loves us so much. Sing Jesus Loves Me. We will hand the new dollar to you as you come get your Christmas bag. Parents please make sure they do not put the money in their mouth. (We will have two little ones present).
